Terranova2.1 Update

Left: Standard
Center: Light
Right: Dark

After hearing from some of you we determined that we have three different types of Terranova2.1.  Although the same color palette can be achieved with all three of them, they require different heat treatments.  We designed a new test that is more sensitive to changes in how the glass strikes.  Using this test we went back and retested all the Terranova2.1 currently in production.  We have separated them into three categories to help you achieve as repeatable a process as possible.  A very small number our resellers received Terranova2.1 Light and they have been contacted.  We are replacing their stock right now.  Check out our new product page for Terranova2.1 where you can choose our standard, light or dark varieties.

Terra2 is Coming April 9th!
Left: Terra2 reduced and encased.  Right: encased and struck.

She's back!  Terra was originally released in April of 2007 and was our most popular color.  Unfortunately the formula was unstable and we could only produce a few batches of her.  We've been trying to solve the mystery for 3 years while you pleaded with us to bring her back!
Finally the mystery is solved and Terra2 is here!  Using the same colorant system we used in the original Terra but in a stabilized formula we have recreated Terra.  She is opaque; she lusters and maintains her luster under clear.  She strikes and does it easily under an encasement.

Based on test batches # Te-317, TE-320 and TE-362.
We recommend you work hot, cool, reduce and encase.

New Murrinis!

Available April 9th in 1 oz tins.  Three different styles to choose from.

AETHER TUESDAYS!
Many of you have been asking when Aether will be available again.  Some of you received the February 15th email that it was in stock but by the time you read the email it was sold out.  In order to avoid that problem, we will be restocking Aether at the same day and time every week.  We will restock on Tuesdays at 12 pm Pacific time.  That's lunch time not midnight.  There will be a five pound limit.  Hopefully after a few weeks the demand will be met, Aether will stay in stock and we can remove the five pound limit.

Aether and Test Batches available Saturday, December 26th at 12 AM Pacific Time.
We know you've been waiting all year and we are thrilled to say she is finally here! Aether will be released on 12.26.2009 at 12 am Pacific Time. It has been a long lesson learning how to make a clear we're willing to put our name on. It's been our biggest challenge yet! Aether is a labor intensive product. She is closely inspected, handled gently, and wrapped up in paper bundles so she is never touched by human hands! All of this extra labor and keeping the price competitive means we cannot afford to discount Aether to resellers, so you will only find her here. She is also availble in second quality rods. Jed has also been hard at work cooking up new test batches based the colors you were so fond of in Miami, NE-325 and NE-323. We have seven for you to try; CL-361, CL-360, CL-359, KA-357, KA-356, CE-352 and CE-352 G. There will be a few other test batches plus an Aurae odd lot for you to try out as well. These will all be available on Saturday, Dec. 26th at 12 am Pacific time.

New Resources
We have two new resources that we hope will help you in your glassmaking endeavors. We have a new online Attic where you can visit previously released test batches and colors that are out of production. These colors are no longer available but are displayed for your reference. The more positive feedback we get on a color, the sooner we start testing it again. If there's one you want us to bring back, be sure to rate it or review it. We also have a new article available for you in The School called One Manufacturer's Perspective on Compatibility. We hope you will take the time to read it especially before purchasing Aether. We know compatibility issues have been on lampworkers' minds in recent months and we want you to know what you can expect from us.

Closed 12.22.2009 -12.27.2009
The shop will be closed from Tuesday, December 22nd to Sunday, December 27th. Jed and I will be enjoying a short staycation with our two kids and our new puppy, Kanga! He's a 15 week old Whippet and our very first family dog. We are having tons of fun getting to know him and figuring out how to take care of a puppy! We hope you and your loved ones are having a wonderful season and as always send you our gratitude for supporting us in this rewarding (and challenging) work!

We made it.

Both the Aurae Light and Olympia Rain are only available from our website.

Olympia Rain
Reduced, encased and shown over a dark background
When Olympia Rain was replaced with Aion  not all of you were happy.  For those that still prefer Olympia Rain we made a few batches just for you!

Now, don't complain about the seed bubbles, or the over reduction; that's why we made Aion!

The Gallery:  It disappeared when our website was migrated.  To get it going again and make it more accessible to everyone we started a new Double Helix Glassworks Flickr group!  Be the first to post and we'll send you a little prize!

Aether:  Thank you for all the feedback you've given us on Aether.  We haven't heard a negative thing yet!  We'll keep you posted on our progress.
 We are almost there!

In order to avoid copyright infringement we are changing the spelling of our new release "Aura", to "Aurae".  We apologize for this inconvenience.  Terranova2 and Luna2 have been updated.  To reflect this update we are labeling the newer batches Terranova2.1 and Luna2.1.  The update is minor but the rods look different and we didn't want you to worry when you received them.  Some Terranova2 that was sent out in January and February may not have been labeled correctly.  If you need to know send an email and we can look it up.  No Luna2.1 has left the building yet.
Thanks and have a great Valentine's Day!

Aura, otherwise known as "pinky purple luster", is ready!  Created from your favorite test batches M-166, M-232 and M-235.  If you like Triton you'll love his pink baby sister!  Retailing at $80/lb.

You can order her through our website, pick her up at the Tucson Best Bead Show from ABR or Arrow Springs, or check our distributor link for your favorite retailer.

TE-265
Are we getting hotter or colder?
Yes, it's true.  We are still trying to resurrect Terra but we've been trying so hard for so long we can't tell anymore!  Are we getting closer?  You tell us.  Just yell out "Getting hot" if we're getting close or "Getting cold" if we're getting further away.

Aether 2nds
Aether is a colorless encasing glass designed for superb workability in the flame. It is engineered to be resistant to boiling, free from seed bubbles, and handled with the utmost care to ensure freedom from scratches and dust.
In other words, it is our clear.
Unfortunately, we get a very small quantity of perfect, bubble free cane in one batch of Aether.  So we want to know if you  will you still love Aether if she has up to 4 bubbles per rod and retails at $40/lb?

Terranova2 Shards
Available in 1oz tins for $12.50.

Should we make more colors available as shards?

We hope you are well and off to a great start this new year!

 Double Helix Glassworks Customers,

You asked for it!  Test batches TN200/202 were a big hit.  The TN series were tests for an improved Terranova and we think we've found the winning combination with those two test formulas.

Terranova2 is a highly saturated silver ruby.  Similar to the original Terra except with red tones where Terra would have been brown.  Terranova2 can also develop copper red webs in a reduction flame.

Work hot, cool and reheat.  Reduce for metallic effects.

The reformulated Terranova2 is available on our website.

Thank you to all our customers who called and emailed with their feedback on test colors, it  helps us decide which direction to move in.

Dear Double Helix Glassworks Customers and Friends,

We've heard some reports of  beads made with our newest test colors are cracking.  We've not had any cracking issues here but to play it safe, we recommend that you not encase any of the K or H test batches or the sample of Khaos sold in mid December.  All of the T batches should encase without any problem.  If you do have cracked beads with any of our colors please email us a photo and we will find a way to make it up to you!

We believe we have corrected the Khaos but will not release it until the new testing equipment we've ordered confirms that it fits correctly.  We did not test our "test" batches as thoroughly as we do our production glass.  This was obviously a mistake and will not happen in the future.

We hope that by being honest about our mistake you'll continue to trust us in the future as you have in the past!

If you have any questions please email us at doublehelixglassworks@msn.com

Thank you,

Warm Wishes this Holiday Season

From Double Helix Glassworks

Thank you for making our holiday bright with your continued support.  We have tried our best to make Terra for you again.  We will list those batches as odd lots on Friday the 14th.  We'll be including a free sample of our new color, Khaos, with each order for the rest of the year.

Happy Holidays!

LUNA

A white opal, will develop lighter purples, blues, greens, pinks and creams. Work hot, cool and reheat.

A great source of information about real world results comes from our customers who freely share their tips and techniques with others on forums like Lampwork Etc.

Terra Has Been Split in Two
Creating a new earth and the moon, Terranova and Luna!  These two new colors will replace Terra!

Speaking of the earth,we hope you've noticed our switch to paper wrapping and bio-degradable peanuts. We've made that choice not only to protect the environment but our customers as well. It's no fun to open a new package only to be distracted by a pile of styrofoam peanuts and plastic bubble wrap! Now all of our packaging is biodegradable, with the exception of those little plastic tube lids.

TERRANOVA
A supersaturated silver opal. It is darker than original Terra and strikes to deep ambers, greens, blues, and purples.  Work hot, cool and reheat.

If Terranova becomes too dark from heating and cooling cycles try cleaning in an intense oxidizing flame and immediately reheating in the back of that flame.

When will this glass will be available, you ask? We'll ship distributor orders early next week and post on our website Friday, October 26th.
